Brighton and Hove FareShare

This FareShare scheme, started in June 2002, is one of 12 independent franchisees around the country started by Crisis, the national charity working with the homeless. It is managed by City Gate Community projects.
FareShare is a unique service, which offers an environmentally positive alternative to landfill by redistributing high quality surplus fresh food from wholesalers, retailers, such as supermarkets and sandwich bars to day centres and night shelters for homeless people. The food is within its use-by date, but past its sell-by date and under strict food hygiene legislation is collected, sorted and delivered by volunteers and employment trainees.
The scheme encourages homeless people into hostels and day centres where they can be directed to appropriate services such as housing advice and medical support.
